2013 - School Kitchen, Office and Storage Projects
Welcome to Volcanes.  Each year, the VCEP tries to improve local conditions by working alongside local parents and the staff of the Volcanes Primary School.  These are a few projects that were felt to be important to them.  In order to understand the scope of the work being done, here are a few drawings showing the local neighborhood and the VCEP building.

Volcanes Community Garden
In the fall of 2013, experts in Community Gardens visited Volcanes and took sample to determine what produce could be cultivated in the weak local soil which is typical for this area of Mexico.  A few small plots were created and more are being added.  With local mothers tending these gardens, the knowledge of how and what to garden could begin to have a major impact on the health of local families.

New School Kitchen with Afternoon Session Principal's Office & Storage
Every day the mothers come to the school to feed their children but without a proper kitchen on the property, they are forced to use a wood bench under a leaky tarp and place coolers on the ground in sunny and rainy conditions. The parents and the Volcanes mothers who feed the children at the school every day would love to have a clean area with a refrigerator, stove and especially a sink to hygienically food.   The small 6 classroom school needs a kitchen.  As well afternoon session principal has no office or storage area.
A group from Vancouver called the 180th Pacific Coast Scout Group raised funds and come down to build the addition for the school in May of 2014.  Working with the these needs, a plan was developed to build a small multi-use building which a volunteer group can fund the materials and build it in May of 2014.

Abandoned Storage Rooms Re-Fitted into 2 New Classrooms
When the VCEP took over the abandoned school building, alongside it was a metal clad temporary two classroom building which was being used as storage by the Volcanes Primary School and the VCEP.  With increasing demand for English and Reading classes, the two classrooms were re-fitted with ceilings, windows, electrical and ceiling fans to accommodate two new learning areas.
However, new storage needed to be found before the rainy season.  It was decided that a storage room could easily be built behind the VCEP building and this was made possible with funding and labor of the Vancouver group building the new Kitchen.
